The platforms crashed down into the lobby, killing 114 people and injuring 200 on July 17, 1981, the year Champlain South was built. Various errors and flaws in the Champlain Towers design and construction bear “eerie” similarity to what was found after the collapse of an overhead walkway at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City, said project leader Jack Moehle. Investigators said they have so far interviewed 33 people, including survivors, victims’ family members and government officials. “It looks like it was strong but not so durable concrete.” “We’ve observed microstructural changes due to environmental factors,” project leader Scott Jones said. They have obtained 70 concrete cores - about 18% of what they intend to collect. Materials scientists are attempting to replicate the concrete mix used in 1980, which has been problematic because materials used in South Florida have changed significantly over the years. ![]() The collapse of roughly half of the building occurred around 1:22 a.m. Mitrani-Reiser also said investigators have a memorandum of understanding with the FBI to enhance videos and still images that could provide clues, such as a video taken by a tourist in a nearby hotel showing the north side of Champlain South moments before the building collapsed. Champlain Towers South opened in 1981 just north of Miami Beach and included 136 condominiums. “Even absent any sudden overload or obvious initiator of a failure on the night of a collapse, the conditions present on the pool deck slab at that time represented a serious safety concern for the building,” Bell said. He said the weak connections between the pool deck and supporting columns were vulnerable to punching shear - a type of failure where the slab disconnects from the column in a sudden, sweeping collapse. They concluded the design failed to meet codes and standards and “the lack of compliance was most severe in the pool deck structure,” Bell said.īell said they found the strength in some pool deck locations was only about half of that required at the time of construction, and also would not have complied with current codes. They also analyzed the standards for reinforced concrete design from 40 years ago. Glenn Bell, team associate leader for the investigation, explained how engineers examined the original building codes and standards from 1980 to determine where construction of Champlain Towers South may have deviated. Those included areas where the pool deck appeared to be sagging dangerously, cracking a nearby planter. But Miami court circuit judge Michael Hanzman shot down the proposal.Ī permanent memorial is set rise on 88th Street. The findings echoed reporting done by the Miami Herald in consultation with structural engineers who identified similar weaknesses in the structure and other problems that compounded in the weeks before the collapse. Some had advocated for a land swap that would have allowed developers to buy Surfiside’s nearby community center for a development opportunity, and allow the site of the tragedy to become a memorial. “To see a high-end development built would be very hard for all of us,” Carlos Wainberg, who lost family members in the collapse, said in a court hearing in 2021. ![]() Such a catastrophic failure would almost certainly have. The move to build a luxury condo on the ill-fated site has rankled some victims’ family members, one of whom called it a burial site. 1, 2021 test The collapse of the Champlain Towers Southcondo left 98 people deadand triggered investigations that could last years. “While no work of architecture can ever remove the pain of the past, nor should it, a truly ambitious work of architecture can respect such a significant site,” Chris Lepine, director at ZHA, said in a statement.ĭamac, led by Hussain Sajwani, bought the site in 2022 through a court-ordered auction nearly a year after part of the Champlain Tower South condo building fell, killing 98. The commission marks the second Miami area project for ZHA, which was founded by the late, Pritzker-prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid. But now the developer is “re-considering the branding options,” said Niall Mc Loughlin, Damac’s international senior vice president of communications. The amenities will include a 100-foot-long rooftop pool as well as a 75-foot-long indoor exercise pool and spa.ĭamac had selected fashion label Roberto Cavali, which it owns, to brand the project. You can really add texture and dimension to this by layering light and airy linens and natural textures that pay homage to the coastal look.' What color goes with blue and grey? 'The brighter shades and muted hues help create a calming space that can be updated time and time again with more affordable accessories to refresh the look. Alternatively, if bold and dark isn't for you, then combining light and airy blues and greys also works effectively, creating an elegant and sophisticated look that is soothing, explains Emma Detering. Opting for dark blues and greys can create a scheme with drama and impact as well as a cozy and inviting feeling. 'I particularly love the versatility of the blue and grey combination – not only is it timeless, but whichever way you go, the colors will change according to the light available – they can blend together, stand apart, play more grey or more blue depending on the light in the space.' Not only do they complement each other perfectly, they can also blend together seamlessly too and often fall in line with the timeless, coastal aesthetic,' says Emma Deterding, founder and creative director of Kelling Designs. 'When it comes to the living room, a classic color scheme that always works well is pairing blue and grey. Does blue and grey go together in a living room? If you love the idea of using bold colors but are cautious of using them wall-to-wall then opting for bold blue blue living room curtains or cushions in a neutral grey scheme is a good place to start as these can be altered easily from season to season. In this scheme the grey on the walls has brown undertones allows the cobalt blue armchairs to pop, while the addition of a velvet sofa in rich terracotta brings further warmth. ![]() 'I like using warm greys to give depth to walls without dictating the room's furniture palette – light greys add a layer of softness while rich greys add depth. Coating the windows, doors and trim in the same grey wall color further unifies the backdrop to a Living Room and can give the illusion of a higher ceiling when painted in a contrasting color. I gravitate towards greys with less blue and more brown in them,' says Catherine Fowlkes of the DC-based architecture firm, Fowlkes Studio. If you have a south-facing room it can take cooler greys, while a in north facing room that receives little light you may want to consider a grey with warm undertones to keep the space feeling cozy. The first thing to think about is the orientation of the room and how much light it receives. In addition to tone, getting the temperature of the wall color right is also important, particularly if you're planning on painting the walls grey. The high-blacked velvet sofa adds to the cocooning feel while red accents bring essential warmth. 'People are becoming bolder with design choices, often opting for really deep, inky blues and charcoal greys for a dramatic statement that evokes a cocoon-like effect,'ĭark colors can work particularly well in large living rooms with high ceilings as they can bring the space in and help it feel more intimate as demonstrated in this scheme. 'For a moody atmosphere, greys and blues in darker tones are a go-to choice as they create a deep backdrop that really allows your furniture and accessories to sing,' adds adds Emma Deterding, founder and creative director, Kelling Designs. So a pale grey would be good if you wanted to make a room look larger, a deep charcoal would make it appear smaller,' says Justyna Korczynska, Senior designer at Crown. 'The paler the tone, the more it will reflect the available light, the darker the tone, the more light it will absorb. When it comes to living room paint ideas, tone is a key factor, as this can have a big impact how a space looks and feels. ![]() ![]() Exactly which flavors you use for your jello is entirely up to you.
